The Mission of the Great Lakes Indian Nations Historical Museum to, ‘Preserve and share the culture and history of the Great Lakes Native Indian Nations via a World Class Museum and Conference Center.’
The Purpose of the museum is ’Share and inform the public of the vast culture and history of the Great Lakes Regional Native Americans, through the collection, preservation and exhibition of traditional and contemporary artifacts and living interpretations, raising the awareness, knowledge and appreciation of the contributions of these Indian nations to American history and culture.
It is envisioned the ’Great Lakes Indian Nations Historical Museum‘ will be located at the crossroads of the Great Lakes at the mouth of the Cheboygan River. The facility will be housed in a 40,000+ sq. ft. facility on a piece of land with a 1000 feet of river frontage.
Space will be allotted for the display and sale of Indian Arts and Wares and for the staging of Pageants depicting events and life of the Great Lakes Indian Nations leading up to and following the advent of the White man into the Great Lakes.
The facility will house display sections for each Indian Nation, Tribe and Band surrounding the Great Lakes; Algonquian, Sioux, Huron, and Iroquois Nations. The facility will include an out-door Pavilion, creating a unique facility to host many different venues.
Adjacent to the Museum will be ‘The Cheboygan Arena’, which will provide a linkage to additional parking, food services, a restaurant and a Conference Center for staging the Great Lakes Indian Nations’ Presentations, Pow Wows and other Indian events.
The Museum will be a major tourist attraction for the region, attracting tourists, summer visitors, school children trips and local area residents. The Michilimackinac region caters to over 3.5 million people who visit during the summer season, and who will be attracted to visit the Museum.
