Project: Trails Development Initiative
Trail development provides great promise for tourism growth and recreational use. The
Trails Development Committee wants to take trail assets one step further by enhancing the
trail system.
Phase one is to enhance access to other parts of the Cheboygan community from the new DNR trailhead at the corner of Lincoln and Western. This includes a proposed trail from the trailhead to City Beach on Lake Huron using an old railroad spur. A second proposed trail would run from the trailhead East along Lincoln Avenue across the Lincoln Bridge and then North through the DNR property along the Cheboygan River to the new pedestrian bridge. Signage would lead trail users through downtown Cheboygan with links to the DNR trail. Both of these trails involve seeking grant opportunities for engineering and construction.
A second phase would link the trail system to Cheboygan State Park and the eastern edge of Duncan Bay, allowing future linkage to other state parks through the trail system, including Aloha State Park.
A great trail system attracts visitors to downtown Cheboygan and would provide a walkable trail system to community residents and bicyclists.
